Why Oh Why?

In 2004 my wife and I toured through China. We were appalled at the extent of the air pollution there, especially in the cities. In one city a local resident, who was in her late twenties, confessed that she had never seen the stars because of the pollution. I just thought this was so sad. Why on earth would we let this happen to the only planet we have?
